Extremely rare vagrant. Only twice recorded in Kuwait, during spring and autumn migration. A species breeding in northern Eurasia and wintering in eastern Asia, probably occurring as an accidental visitor.

It has an extremely large range with a population that is moderately declining. It breeds across northern Europe and Asia. It is migratory, wintering in south east Asia, Japan, and eastern China. It is a rare wanderer to western Europe.
