Extremely rare vagrant. A resident of the Arabian hinterland only recently recorded in Kuwait. Careful observation is needed to distinguish it from the more common Mauryan Shrike.

Research is ongoing on the Grey Shrike taxa. The geographic range of race Lanius meridionalis aucheri is from the coast of Red Sea to s Iran and Arabian Peninsula and is sometimes split as a separate species. It generally has darker underparts than Mauryan Grey Shrike
