Information
Uncommon passage migrant and winter visitor, usually in small numbers. Up to 32 recorded in early March 1987. This is a distinctive small Calidris sandpiper with yellow legs usually preferring inland muddy pools with marshy fringes or agricultural fields.
Where in Kuwait
Typically found singly or in small numbers at brackish inland pools in Jahra area and farmlands. They have a distinctive mouse-like feeding behaviour, creeping steadily along the edges of pools
In the world
It has an extremely large range with an uncertain population size and is a full migrant, migrating on a broad front overland across the full width of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Outside of the breeding season the species inhabits inland freshwater wetlands and on the coast shows a strong preference for mudflats in sheltered inlets and salt-marshes, whilst tending to avoid open and sandy beaches. They have an intriguing breeding and parental care system in which males and female parents incubate separate clutches, typically in different locations.
