Scarce passage migrant and rare winter visitor. Usually solitary but sometimes migrating in small groups. The species has declined in many parts of its range, although it is not approaching the thresholds for Vulnerable status.

A cryptic denizen of reed swamps and often on agricultural lands in Kuwait that is probably under-recorded due to its secret and unobtrusive habits.
In the world
This species has an extremely large range with some populations being sedentary due to mild winters. It is the continental populations that are largely migratory and it has very restrictive breeding habitat requirements.
