Information
Very common resident. Kuwait’s most widespread Herons and is found in two distinct colour forms (a dark and pale form). Care should be taken not to confuse the pale form with the similar sized Little Egret
Where in Kuwait
This species nests in large mixed colonies on Warba and Bubiyan Island. It was also recorded nesting on shipwrecks and even on Kubbar island in 1921. Recently 900 breeding adults were recorded on Bubiyan. This species is present throughout the year predominantly along much of the coastline.
In the world
This species has a large range, when not breeding it is a solitary feeder, although it is occasionally found in small groups with often both colour forms together.
Local threats
As it is primarily coastal, oil pollution is a major threat. Like the Western Great Egret, this species was also persecuted and hunted for the plume trade in the past, but has since recovered since this practice was abolished.
