Critically Endangered

Information

Vagrant. Observed in autumn, winter and spring passage in Kuwait, often on open farmland and waterside habitats. The most endangered wader visiting Kuwait, whose numbers are in decline. Its breeding areas are primarily in Kazakhstan and southern Russia and its populations and movements are still poorly monitored.
Where in Kuwait
Only recorded 5 times in Kuwait and sadly the 6th record was of three birds unnecessarily killed on passage migration at the end of 2012 by shooters that did not know what they were.
In the world
A Critically Endangered species because its population has undergone a very rapid reduction, for reasons that are poorly understood. It breeds in Russia and Kazakhstan, dispersing through Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Turkey to winter grounds in Israel, Eritrea, Sudan and north-west India. It may also be found in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kuwait and Oman during the winter.
Local threats
Indiscriminate shooting.
