Information
It is a small passerine bird in the finch family and is widespread throughout Europe, north Africa and south west Asia. In some countries it is considered a prestigious song bird which has been trapped for many years.
Where in Kuwait
Only 1 record for Kuwait recorded at Al Abraq in April 2013. It is more likely to feed in fields and gardens in winter, which fits where this first record was seen.
In the world
It has an extremely large range and trends since 1980 show that populations have undergone a moderate decline. The the breeding range extends throughout mainland Europe, north-western Africa and reaches east to Turkey and is mainly resident, but some northernmost populations migrate further south. It uses its powerful bill to break open seeds, which it feeds on throughout the year.
Local threats
Indiscriminate shooting and trapping for the illegal bird market.
