Information
Rare winter visitor. One of the Western Palearctic’s most widespread finches. Sometimes driven south during hard winters, but probably not occurring annually in Kuwait. Usually found on agricultural land and plantations in very small numbers.
Where in Kuwait
It uses a range of habitats, but open woodland is favoured, although it is common in gardens and on farmland. It has been recorded at Jahra Farms and Al Abraq.
In the world
It has an extremely large range and in Europe, trends since 1980 show that populations have undergone a moderate decline. It is widespread and very familiar throughout Europe and is the most common finch in western Europe, and the second most common bird in the British Isles. Its range extends into western Asia, northwestern Africa, and Macaronesia. It was introduced from Britain into a number of its overseas territories in the 18th and 19th centuries. In New Zealand it is a common species. In South Africa a very small breeding colony in the suburbs of Constantia, Hout Bay and Camps Bay near Cape.Town is the only remnant of one such introduction.
Local threats
Habitat loss and degradation and trapping for illegal bird trade.
