Information
Uncommon passage migrant; scarce winter visitor. This is a widespread Eurasian species that reaches Kuwait in fairly small numbers; the highest numbers have been recorded on the coast; 20 at Khiran in mid March 2000.
Where in Kuwait
Outside of the breeding season it is found in a greater variety of habitats, including farmlands, forested tracks, inland pools and even urban areas and has been recorded in the Jahra area in the east and Al Abraq in the west.
In the world
It has an extremely large range and a population that is suspected to be stable overall in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats. The species is widely distributed, with several populations breeding in Europe and Asia and migrating to tropical regions in Asia and Africa. Wagging its long tail at an almost incessant rate whilst walking or running briskly along the ground, this species is a conspicuous inhabitant of freshwater systems across much of Europe and Asia.
Local threats
Indiscriminate shooting, trapping and habitat loss.
