Scarce passage migrant. An extremely elusive bird that skulks in damp areas; its presence is usually recorded during ornithological ringing. In spring it is sometimes located due to its unusual song, which resembles the trilling sound of a grasshopper.

It is a species found in short dense vegetation, often close to water with one recent record from Al Abraq
In the world
It has an extremely large range and a population that is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction. It breeds across much of temperate Europe and Asia. It is migratory, wintering from northwest Africa to India. Like its name suggests, it is a skulking species which is very difficult to see except sometimes when singing. It creeps slowly through grass and low foliage
