Information
Common passage migrant and scarce summer visitor; has bred. A widespread reed bird, identified by its large size and stout bill. In Kuwait it is sometimes difficult to separate from its relative the Indian Reed Warbler, although its song is slightly different.
Where in Kuwait
It is the largest of the European warblers and is more often found in reed fringed pools and outfalls in the Jahra area, but also in areas of Acacia at Al Abraq and SAANR.
In the world
It has an extremely large range but a population that is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction. It breeds throughout mainland Europe and Asia, and migrates south to sub-Saharan Africa for winter. Reed beds are the favoured habitat of this species during the breeding season. It selects tall reeds with thick stems situated close to open water in which to build its nest (2) (3). During the winter, the great reed-warbler may be found in reed beds, bush thickets
