Information
Scarce passage migrant and winter visitor. A large unmistakable black and white kingfisher seen in very small numbers along the coast and at pools, even recorded on Failaka. Often seen hovering over the water during its hunt for fish.
Where in Kuwait
It is found in variety of fresh and saltwater habitat, mainly in the Jahra area, but has been seen as far south as Green Island
In the world
It has an extremely large range with a global population that has not been quantified. It is found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, excluding only the most arid regions, to north Egypt, central and southern Turkey, Israel, Syria, Iraq, and Southwest Iran, as well as much of south and Southeast Asia, ranging from Northeast Afghanistan to Indochina. It is the largest bird capable of a true hover in still air, it is also the only kingfisher with all black and white plumage.

Habitat loss, pesticides and pollution and indiscriminate shooting
