Information
Abundant passage migrant and winter visitor; scarce summer visitor. One of Eurasia’s most widespread gulls; often in close contact with humans. Up to 5000 individuals have been observed in Kuwait Bay.
Where in Kuwait
A coastal habitat species, but also found in farmland, rubbish tips, urban parks, gardens and playing fields where it is present for most of the winter months. It is more common in the north of the country than it is in the south.
In the world
It has an extremely large range with a decreasing population and northern breeding populations of this species are strongly migratory, although populations at lower latitudes tend to be sedentary or locally dispersive. This species is susceptible to avian influenza and avian botulism. The common name of this species is inaccurate, as the adults have a chocolate-brown head in summer.
