Information
Uncommon winter visitor. Winters on extensive deltaic mudflats; 19 recorded in late March 2004 on Bubiyan Island. A poorly known east Asian species, whose recent rapid population decline is attributed to the destruction of its non-breeding stopover wetlands.
Where in Kuwait
In its wintering range the species occurs in sheltered coastal habitats. It is infrequently encountered and past records are from the eastern parts of Bubiyan Island and a handful of records from Jahra Bay all in winter
In the world
It is classified as Vulnerable owing to a rapid population decline caused by the reclamation of non-breeding stopover grounds. It is a long distance migratory shorebird and travels in mixed flocks with other Knot and Turnstone species. It breeds in north-east Siberia, Russia, wintering mainly in Australia, but also throughout the coastline of South-East Asia and on the coasts of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula.
Local threats
