Information
Scarce passage migrant and winter visitor. Has been observed on open farmlands in winter and in open desert. This bird is unique among the plovers as the female has brighter plumage than the male.
Where in Kuwait
On passage the species stages in exposed areas with short vegetation, such as ploughed fields, and during the winter its habitats include stony and shrubby steppe, semi-desert, ploughed farmland and the margins of cultivation, which minimises the number sites it may be found on in Kuwait.
In the world
A species with a large range and declining population and is fully migratory and travels non-stop on a broad front across Europe. It breeds in the Arctic tundra of northern Eurasia, from Norway to eastern Siberia. This species winters in a narrow belt across north Africa from Morocco eastwards to Iran. Migration stopovers are traditional, and small parties (trips) of Dotterels pass through each year at these usually inland arable or grassy sites. The winter habitat is semi-desert.The term 'dotterel' is a contemptuous label used to describe somebody who is considered to be a doting old fool.
