Information
Uncommon passage migrant and winter visitor; scarce summer visitor and localized breeder. During the non-breeding period this bird will often be seen away from reed beds, in marine bays and a variety of other habitats often with other waterfowl.
Where in Kuwait
It is found in areas with consistent water levels on brackish ponds with reed cover in the Jahra Bay area where it feeds on pondweeds and invertebrates. In favourable conditions it has been recorded breeding in these areas.
In the world
It has an extremely large range although there is decline in some populations. Populations in northern Eurasia are fully migratory however, migrating on a broad front through continental Europe and across the Sahara. The saying 'as bald as a coot' refers to its prominent white frontal shield.
Local threats
Fluctuating water levels and wetland and habitat degradation.
