Information

Rare passage migrant. A medium-sized eagle, closely related to the Greater Spotted Eagle. Often hunts for rodents, amphibians and birds on agricultural land. Its main migration route is in the Eastern Mediterranean, well to the west of the Gulf.
Where in Kuwait
During migration, the entire population heads south, passing primarily through Israel on route to the wintering grounds in southern and eastern Africa. So records of this species are exceptions to the main migratory flyway for this species.
In the world
It has an extremely large range and appears to be recovering from decline. The breeding range extends throughout much of central, east and south-east Europe, through Turkey and the Caucasus mountains, as far as southern Russia and Iran. Three hunting techniques are employed by the lesser spotted eagle: soaring at around 100 metres before diving down; swopping down from a perch; and walking along the ground.
Local threats
Indiscriminate shooting.
