In the world
This species has a large range across Africa. It breeds in Iraq’s Southern Marshes and may have been more common in the past in the Mesopotamian Delta. This species is mainly sedentary but is subject to little known opportunistic local movements related to drought and wetland conditions. This species shows a preference for still, shallow, inland freshwater and alkaline lakes and typically avoiding marine habitats and it usually breeds in mixed-species colonies.
